The Canvasback Duck Mounting Process

Cypress Slough Taxidermy’s canvasback mounts and other waterfowl pieces are of the highest quality. We meticulously clean and flesh each bird prior to mounting, then individually move each feather into position so that the bird is posed in a natural position. All duck legs and feet are injected to give them a natural lifelike appearance.

Drake Canvasback Mount: Preparing Waterfowl For Your Duck Mount

Even more than big game, ducks, geese, and upland birds require careful handling and storage if you want to preserve them for taxidermy work. Delicate feathers and bones can crease and break much more easily than hair or hardened antler.

After shooting DO NOT ring the duck’s neck. DO NOT gut or pluck any feathers. Either tuck the head under a wing or lay it over the back. Keep out of sunlight and in a freezer bag (keep a freezer bag with you in the field just in case). Freeze as soon as possible. Broken bones are fixable but missing or broken feather are not so keep the duck where it will stay untouched until you get it frozen.

If storing in a freezer for long periods, wrap the legs and head in wet paper towel to prevent freezer burn.

Nylon stockings are good for transport from the field only, NOT for storage since they don’t prevent freezer burn.

About The Canvasback. . .

Male canvasbacks have a chestnut-red head and neck, a black breast, grayish back, black rump, and blackish-brown tail. The sides, flank, and belly are white, while the wing coverts are grayish and vermiculated with black. The bill is blackish and the legs and feet are bluish-gray. The iris is bright red in the spring, but duller in the winter. Female canvasbacks have a light brown head and neck, grading into a darker brown chest and foreback. The sides, flanks, and back are grayish-brown. The bill is blackish and the legs and feet are bluish-gray.

Canvasback Migration & Wintering

Canvasbacks migrate through the Mississippi Flyway to wintering grounds in the mid-Atlantic United States and the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV), or the Pacific Flyway to wintering grounds along the coast of California. Historically, the Chesapeake Bay wintered the majority of canvasbacks, but with the recent loss of submerged aquatic vegetation in the bay, their range has shifted south towards the LMAV. Brackish estuarine bays and marshes with abundant submerged aquatic vegetation and invertebrates are ideal wintering habitat for canvasbacks.
